Kelvin Hughes supports National Women in Engineering Day 2016
- 23 Jun 2016
Kelvin Hughes is proud to be supporting National Women in Engineering Day, which this year falls on 23rd June. This annual event, which was set up by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) to celebrate its 95th anniversary, is dedicated to raising the profile and celebrating the achievements of women in engineering.
Russell Gould, Chief Executive of Kelvin Hughes, commented:
“We have always actively encouraged women to pursue careers in Engineering, through direct recruitment, work experience opportunities and even running events in schools such as New Hall School in Chelmsford, and we will continue today to do so. Kelvin Hughes is an equal opportunities company, and is committed to providing a wide range of career opportunities for women and men of all ages and backgrounds.”
Statistics published by the Women’s Engineering Society reveals that in 2015, only 9% of the UK’s engineering workforce was female, and only 6% of the UK’s registered engineers and technicians were women. The research also confirms that the UK also has the lowest percentage of female engineers in Europe, with Latvia, Bulgaria and Cyprus leading with nearly 30%. Increasing the number of women engineers in the UK is a priority right now, therefore. Last year, the annual shortfall of people with the right skills to support our engineering sector was 55,000; however, job satisfaction among women engineers is extremely high – a 2015 survey of 300 female engineers revealed that 84% were either ‘happy’ or ‘extremely happy’ with their career choice. Furthermore, research published by management consultancy McKinsey in 2015 revealed that companies are 15% more likely to perform well if they are gender diverse.
National Women in Engineering Day 2016 has a special theme: #RaisingProfiles. To celebrate this theme, WES will be publishing a list of the top 50 women in engineering in the Daily Telegraph on 23rd June 2016.
