Avian Detection

Kelvin Hughes collaborates with specialist solution providers for applications that require avian and wildlife radar, which is a unique and niche area of radar techniques. The SharpEye™ radar integrates easily with a mobile or static system equipped with antenna and tracker system for the detection of birds or bats.

Typical environments requiring radar as the primary sensor is bird strike alert and avoidance systems at civil, military and non-permanent airfields, airports, and approach and take off flight paths. The radar enables the local airspace operator to identify large birds and flocks of birds that are on a path or have potential to cross or interrupt air traffic. Action can then be taken by use of automatic bird scare systems or other manual actions can be initiated.

Other Avian applications include the monitoring, mapping and analysis of migratory birds and bird protection and scaring in hazardous areas such as the Canada Tar Sands.

In collaboration with DeTect Inc. we have provided SharpEye™ coherent radar transceivers and antennas for:

  • Monitoring the movements of birds
  • Bird strike avoidance radar system at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan
  • Bird strike avoidance system at Boston Logan International Airport
  • Bird Strike avoidance system at Riga Airport in Latvia
  • Bird scare system for migratory birds passing through the Tar Sands in Canada
