Ice Detection with MantaDigital™

Kelvin Hughes’ "Enhanced Target Detection" (ETD) significantly enhances the display of slow-moving or stationary targets without interfering with the normal radar appearance or operation.

MantaDigital™ ETD in operation

ETD, the latest innovation in the MantaDigital™ range treats stationary and moving returns differently, highlighting the moving ones by displaying them in a different colour. ETD combined with the dual PPI mode provided by MantaDigital™ enables the operator to continue using the radar in the normal way with the addition of a simultaneous advanced detection view available on the secondary PPI without cluttering the main display. ETD can be viewed in either the main or secondary radar window.

Ice Detection

The navigator’s comments from an Antarctic survey vessel were as follows: “The ETD feature has been put to good use this season. It is a very effective feature in the ice and is used regularly. It is particularly good at defining ice edges which can be useful when looking for leads in the ice. The screen shots above show ETD in action on our X band radar.

The ETD really does come into its own when operating in restricted visibility. Icebergs can often be identified within pack ice because of the radar shadow they show behind them, the ETD shows this effect well.

The radar overlay on the ECDIS works well and has been very useful for plotting the coastline.”
